Product photo backgrounds: cutout, white or generated scene?
Choose the right background workflow for a product listing without confusing transparency with a white file or a generated scene.
This guide describes the current AIPhotoRetouch workflow. Generative edits can change details; compare every result with your original.
The short answer
Use background removal when you want to isolate the photographed product. Export PNG or WebP for transparency; in AIPhotoRetouch, JPG is flattened onto white. Use a generative product look only when you want a new scene and can review every detail. A generated setting can change the product, so keep the original as your reference.
Open the photo editorStart with the destination’s actual image rules
Read the current image requirements of the store, marketplace or ad placement you plan to use. Check dimensions, aspect ratio, file format and background requirements at that destination. A transparent image and a white-background image can look identical on a white webpage while behaving differently when another application places them on a colored surface.
Keep the original product photograph. It is your reference for the shape, color, packaging text and included accessories. Use a clear, well-lit image with the whole product visible. A background tool cannot make an obscured label or missing edge reliably accurate just by creating a plausible-looking replacement.
Choose Cutout to remove the photographed background
Upload a suitable product image and choose Cutout. In AIPhotoRetouch this is automatic segmentation, costs 1 credit and is not controlled by written instructions. Inspect the outline before downloading, especially thin handles, fine gaps, reflective edges and translucent material. Try a clearer source when the product blends into its background.
Choose PNG or WebP when you need transparency. Choose JPG when a white flattened background is appropriate for the next step. This is an export decision, not a guarantee that the image satisfies a particular marketplace’s composition rules. Check framing and resolution separately in the final file.
Choose a generated scene only when the product can be checked
A Product studio look is for a new visual treatment, rather than simply extracting the existing pixels. Select the look, upload your own product photograph and review the request cost before running it. Looks cost 3 credits. Keep the source photograph nearby when deciding whether the result is usable.
Inspect logos, labels, proportions, fasteners, seams and accessories. Reject an image that suggests a feature, finish or included item you do not actually sell. An attractive generated scene can still misrepresent a product. For a listing that demands exact appearance, a straightforward cutout or an appropriately photographed background may be the better option.
Keep a small batch consistent
AIPhotoRetouch supports browser batches of up to 10 photos and ZIP downloads. Start with one representative product before committing the rest of a batch. Decide how much space the product should occupy, whether the background is transparent or white, and which export format the destination accepts.
Check every result, not just the first one. Place all final images together at the intended display size to spot inconsistent framing or edges. A segmentation task should not be evaluated with the same criteria as a generated scene: the first must preserve a useful outline, while the second also needs a careful product-accuracy review.
Count finished files and credits before subscribing
Google sign-in includes 3 welcome credits with no card needed. Those can cover up to three 1-credit cutouts if you spend them only on background removal. The EUR 5 weekly plan includes 15 credits per paid week: enough for 15 cutouts, five 3-credit looks, or a mix. Unused weekly credits expire at the reset.
For a large catalog, compare dedicated product-workflow tools and public API options as well. AIPhotoRetouch is designed for a browser workflow and small batches; it currently has no public customer API. Choose based on the volume you can review and the files you can actually use, rather than assuming every generated attempt becomes a publishable listing image.
Common questions
Why does my transparent product image have a white background?
A JPG cannot store transparency. In AIPhotoRetouch, use PNG or WebP for a transparent cutout; a JPG download is flattened onto white.
Can I tell Cutout to add a shadow or change the product?
Written instructions do not affect Cutout. Use an appropriate generative look for a new treatment, then review the product carefully. A cutout and a generated scene are different operations.
