Retouch a portrait with glasses while keeping the person recognizable
A practical review process for lens glare, frame shape and eye detail, with clear limits on what an AI edit can establish.
This guide describes the current AIPhotoRetouch workflow. Generative edits can change details; compare every result with your original.
The short answer
If the eyes are visible, start with a restrained edit and compare the lenses, frames and gaze with the original. If glare completely hides an eye, an AI-generated replacement is an interpretation, not recovered evidence. A clearer photograph or a careful manual workflow may be the more reliable choice.
Open the photo editor
Check what the photograph actually contains
Look at each lens separately. A faint reflection with visible eye detail is a different problem from an opaque white patch. Also check for tilted frames, blur and reflections crossing the eyebrows. Do not assume that a convincing-looking eye after editing proves the original detail was recovered.
Choose a source where the face is sharp and both eyes are readable if one is available. Ask the person’s permission and agree on the intended change. A professional profile picture should still look like the person people will meet, including the glasses they normally wear.
Reduce the reflection before relying on retouching
When you can reshoot, change the relative angle of the light, camera or subject in small steps and inspect the lenses after each adjustment. Try a larger, softer light placed away from the camera axis. Keep the person comfortable; do not solve glare by forcing an unnatural pose or removing glasses they want in the picture.
Take several frames and compare them at a useful viewing size. The goal is readable eyes with natural light, not necessarily a completely reflection-free lens. If only an existing photo is available, keep it unchanged as a reference and be realistic about what is hidden.
Write a brief that protects recognizable details
For a subtle finish in AIPhotoRetouch, choose natural retouching and start from the original JPG, PNG or WebP. A useful brief is: keep the glasses, frame shape, eye color and gaze; soften uneven lighting without changing facial features. These instructions describe your intent; they do not guarantee preservation.
A quality retouch costs 3 credits. Google sign-in includes 3 welcome credits with no card needed. Review the displayed cost before starting, and budget separately for another successful attempt. AIPhotoRetouch does not provide a dedicated glasses-glare slider or a manual masking brush.
Use local control when the correction is specific
Adobe’s Photoshop guidance describes localized brightness adjustments, masking and cloning for glasses glare. Those controls let an editor limit a correction to a small area rather than regenerate the whole portrait. They still require judgment: copying an eye or reconstructing a hidden area changes the photograph.
Use a manual editor when the rest of the image must remain fixed or when a client needs precise revisions. For identity documents or other regulated uses, follow the destination’s rules and prefer a compliant original capture; this guide does not establish that an edited portrait will be accepted.

Review the lenses before the overall polish
Compare frame thickness, hinge position, nose pads and where the temples meet the hair. Then check pupil shape, iris color, gaze direction and eyelid contours. Look for a different eye magnification between lenses, broken rims or reflections that stop abruptly at an edited boundary.
Finally inspect the whole face at the intended crop. Reject a result that looks attractive but changes the person, and return to the original for any new attempt. A small natural reflection can be less distracting than an invented eye or a lens that no longer behaves like glass.
Common questions
Can AI recover an eye hidden by white glare?
A generated eye may look plausible, but it cannot establish the exact detail that was not recorded. Use a clearer source or disclose reconstruction when it matters.
Should every reflection be removed?
No. A small reflection can look natural if the eyes remain readable. Judge the portrait’s purpose and preserve believable lenses and identity.
